The Summer is here again

 Dear Bloggers,

Summer is just around the corner, bringing with it the sun and the anticipation of holiday adventures. Like many, I was all set for a getaway—seven nights at an all-inclusive seaside resort, where I imagined leisurely days by the pool or on the beach, endless ice cream, and exploring the local sights. After almost a year of planning, I could hardly wait to bask in the sun.

However, life had other plans. We faced unexpected financial strain due to issues with the Tax Office, which ultimately wiped out our savings, including my pension. It pushed us to a point where we had to sell our home to avoid eviction. The situation was bewildering; we received little explanation, just a stern warning to pay up or risk heading into deeper trouble. Reluctantly, we decided to relocate—not just to safeguard our remaining funds, but also to be nearer to my wife’s medical facilities, which were so crucial for her recovery. She'd been through a really tough patch, and I was committed to supporting her through it.

With the costs of relocating and securing a new mortgage, the idea of a holiday abroad suddenly felt unfeasible. My wife wasn’t up for travel, and our kids understood the situation all too well. So, I made the decision to cancel our trip.

But rather than allowing it to dampen our summer spirit, we opted for local adventures instead, which turned out to be just as fulfilling. We’re planning visits to the nearby fun park, train rides to local towns, lakeside picnics, and even camping in the garden. Surprisingly, canceling our holiday gave me the opportunity to fully explore the treasures right in our own backyard. I’ve come to realize that you don’t have to venture far to create wonderful memories.

So, don’t feel sorry for me as I juggle the stresses of moving—experiencing a house move firsthand really puts it on the list of life’s biggest challenges—but I’m confident that my family and I will enjoy an incredible summer right here in the Frisian Lake District.

We’re still knee-deep in remodels at our new place, but we're feeling optimistic. Who knows? Maybe we’ll even find some financial breathing space for a little getaway later in the year.
